Raimana Van Bastolaer, Tahiti’s most famous surfer, is one of the world’s most extreme and respected surf legends, and a virtual king in his native Tahiti. He is notorious for his commanding presence at Teahupoo, the world’s thickest wave.
The Tahitian dream – Raimana is known and respected worldwide for his Polynesian Aloha spirit and for his death defying feats at his terrifying homebreak: Teahupo’o.
He achieved worldwide fame this year when he was nearly decapitated by a jet ski while riding through a barrel – a photo of the incident made headlines worldwide and even resulted in a two-page spread in Sports Illustrated. Raimana, in typical modest-soft-spoken style played the whole thing down but it only added to his legend.

My family and I watched this movie at the Orlando Science Center. The scenery was amazing. The story was a typical surf story. Waiting for the perfect swell with island folklore to fill the void. Followed by some fun surf sessions.
The only upset was the science behind Chopes. For anyone that had never seen this wave (mainly 90% of the people at my showing) the wave wasn’t described to it’s full amazement. I know that it’s difficult to display the wave profile and massiveness and how it is formed. But since the CG models were already shown, it would have been cool to display how the water is sucked from the reef to form the shallow bottom compared to the depth of the back of the wave.
Either way, we found it to be a fun surf movie.
